Why is Thunderbird marking read emails as unread? This happens with most messages.

Most of the time my google mail emails are marked unread, even as I'm reading them. Sometimes they get marked read, eventually, but other times they keep being shown as unread, even after I read them again, even after I select 'mark messages read' on my mailbox. It sure is annoying and time consuming trying to keep track of unread messages.
